My name is Stacey, I have been a professional photographer for about 5 years, a "mom-tog" for over 20, but I've been taking my own photos since I was in the 5th grade. I had one of those LeClik cameras, ya know, the ones that had the disk shaped negatives? I took that with me to Washington DC on the 5th grade patrol trip. After returning and having the film developed my grandaddy told my mom how talented I was and that I “had an eye for photography” specifically composition. He was amazed with my ability as a 5th grader to take photos of the monuments with a creative eye, and not just as a snapshot.
My first memory of capturing an image, however, was at much younger age, before I ever had my first camera. I can remember trying to burn the images of my grandfather in my mind - the only image capture device I had at five or six years old. I desperately wanting to remember the way his hands laid on the bed as we were napping, his ears, even his voice. After he passed away, just a few years later, I remember laying in bed repeating his voice in my head, laying my hands on the bed mimicking the way he had laid his hands, replaying those images in my mind over and over, but the older I got the more I began to forget- sadly my mind's camera is not as effective as a film or digital camera. Thankfully I do have one great photo of him and my grandmother that they had professionally taken before their 50th anniversary, and it is exactly the way I remember him. I can’t imagine not having that photo.
These two memories, from two of my grandfathers, have acted as a catalyst to my obsession of taking photos, and capturing memories; not just for myself, but for others as well. I believe a photograph is a tangible gift you can give to future generations, and everyone deserves to have a beautiful image of themselves that they are proud of; a photo that tells their story.
